Ladder shafts are easy to make, and only take wood, which is in infinite supply and easy to farm. The only thing better is a minecart ride, but those take a long time to make and a lot of iron to craft. Stronghold Spiral Staircases are naturally generated components of strongholds. Ladders are fairly quick to go up and down. 2x2 staircases would be impossible, 3x3 would be 100 longer, 4x4 would be 50 longer, 5x5 33 longer, etc. Adding landings would provide no extra functionality, and would increase the size of the staircase significantly. In my version, I place torches on the floor in corners, I mine the 8 squares around the center, but leave a single block central pillar in the middle from top to bottom.
